Lot Essay

The present work was executed in 1960 while Paolozzi spent two years at the Hamburg Hochschule für bildende Künste, to explore the shipbreakers yards. There he found a rich new vocabulary of mechanical, prefabricated shapes. Married with the artist's affection and magnetism towards the life and work of the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), Paolozzi formulates a hard edged abstract design with mechanistic elements.
