Lot Essay

Ann was one of Epstein's grand-daughters, the elder daughter of Lucian Freud and Kitty, Epstein and Kathleen's elder daughter. Epstein made several bronzes of the little girl and her sister Annabel, 'In the small, exquisite heads of his grandchildren, Ann and Annabel, youthful innocence is expressed by treating the eye-sockets as deep, dark voids. Epstein believed that in this way the child 'confronts time and [its] destiny ... boldly and trustingly [looking out] upon a world newly born of [its] vision' (see Exhibition catalogue, Leeds City Art Galleries, Jacob Epstein Sculpture and Drawings, 1987, p. 259).
