SIR RICHARD FRANCIS BURTON (1821-1890)
The Guide-Book. A Pictorial Pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. London: William Clowes and Sons for the Author, 1865. 8° (19.4 x 12.8cm). Wood-engraved portrait of the author by J.Cooper after W.J.Allen. Original green glazed-paper wrappers, the upper cover with author and title within a single-line border (light soiling, small split to upper joint).
A VERY FINE COPY OF ONE OF THE RAREST AND MOST EPHEMERAL OF ALL BURTON'S WORKS. Penzer calls it 'Exceedingly rare' and had seen only one copy at auction and none offered by booksellers. The introduction to the booklet explains that it was produced to acompany an illustrated lecture based on Burton's Pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. The project was suggested to Burton by the directors of the Royal Polytechnic Institution, and the final 'Pictorial Representation' included scenery by Mr.G.Apps, and 'dissolving views' mostly painted from Burton's own drawings by Messrs. Childe and Hills. Penzer p.76.
