Captain Sydney Vincent Bowden rode in the Jameson Raid as a member of the Bechuanaland Border Police. After leaving Fettes College, he served in the ranks of the Cape Mounted Rifles from 1889 to 1894 and joined the B.B.P. in 1895. After the Raid he joined the Cape Police and rose to the rank of Sub-Inspector, participating in the Bechuanaland Campaign and the Boer War. During the Great War Bowden served in France with the Royal Field Artillery and was Mentioned in Despatches.
