The library of the Royal Gymnasium (i.e. Latin School) and Cathedral Library was originally founded in 1475. Skara's cathedral goes back to 1150; it became one of the largest and most important provincial libraries in Sweden at that time. The systematic catalogue by its librarian, V. Luth (1783-1844) lists 11,000 volumes, including early printed books and manuscripts.
