In 1909 Gore moved to 31 Mornington Crescent; from here and from No. 6, Sickert's studio, he painted a series of more than forty views of Mornington Crescent and the surrounding square mile. The present work shows the central communal gardens (which no longer exist) now occupied by a building originally erected in 1926 for the Carreras cigarette factory.
The first owner, John Quinn (1870-1924), was the foremost collector of British and French paintings and sculpture during the first half of the 20th Century. Quinn was a close friend of the artist Augustus John who helped him to amass a superb collection of contemporary British art by introducing him to his circle of friends and by making the purchasing arrangements on his behalf. In an undated letter (in the collection of Frederick Gore, the artist's son), John writes to Gore 'I will look through your paintings and choose three for Quinn ... I got one [for him] at your last show' [held at the Chenil Gallery, in March 1911]. Quinn's four paintings by Gore of Mornington Crescent views from circa 1909-1911, 'The Avenue', 'Frosty Morning', 'Mornington Crescent' (sold in these Rooms on 1 July 1993 for 30,000, private collection), and the present work were all auctioned at the three-day sale of his collection in February 1927.
