    Lot Essay

The Angkor Vat period from the late eleventh to the third quarter of the twelfth century saw an exceptional construction activity. Some of the greatest and finest temples were created during this period. The stone and bronze sculptures fitting these temples seem to have been less innovative and emphasized more decorative motifs as can be gleaned form this unusual large bronze Shiva figure. His elaborate sampot and crown are a treat for the eye. Though cast in a hieratic posture he emphasizes at the same time an overwhelming spiritual grandeur.
