STEVIN, Simon (1548-1620). De Beghinselen der Weeghconst -De Weeghdaet Praxis artis Ponderaria -De Beghinselen Elementa des Waterwichts. Leiden: Franciscus Raphelengius for Christopher Plantin, 1586.
3 works in one volume, 4o (209 x 155 mm). Woodcut printer's device on each title, numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in text. (Some minor pale dampstaining and occasional marginal soiling.) Contemporary Dutch vellum over pasteboard.
FIRST EDITIONS. These three works often appear together in one volume and together constitute an important collection of works in the fields of statics and hydrostatics. De Beghinselen der Weeghconst is Stevin's chief work on mechanics, and is mainly devoted to statistics. From the evidence it provides, the work establishes Stevin as the first Renaissance author to develop and continue the work of Archimedes. The book contains discussions of the theory of the lever, the theorems of the inclined plane, and the determination of the center of gravity. It also includes the most famous of Stevin's discoveries, the law of the inclined plane, which he demonstrated using the "clootcrans" or wreath of spheres. The third work (the fourth in the volume), De Beghinseelen des Waterwichts, is the first systematic treatise on hydrostatics since Archimedes. Stevin gives a simple and immediately comprehensible explanation for the Archimedean principle of displacement. ALL VERY RARE.
