The composition of the present work is loosely based on van Dyck's so-called 'friendship portraits' of women. The double portrait appears to be a composite of two different images by van Dyck and seems likely to have been executed by someone closely associated with the artist or his studio. The portrait of Anne, Lady Rich is based on a portrait by van Dyck in an English private collection. She was the daughter of Edward, 2nd Earl of Manchester and his second wife, Anne, daughter of Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick. She married Robert Rich, Earl of Holland.
