The two young women are in the costume and hair-style of the Heian period. The poem says "The pine whose life was limited to one thousand years will live to ten thousand now that you have pulled it up" (translation by Jack Hillier, Suzuki Harunobu: An exhibition of his colour-prints and illustrated books on the occasion of the bicentenary of his death in 1770, exh. cat.
