Mindscapes: Early Works by S.H. Raza, 1945-50, Geeti Sen, curator, Delhi Art Gallery, March 2001, p. 37.
A trip to Kashmir in 1948 marked a new shift in Raza's painting style. There he met photographer Henri Cartier Bresson who suggested that Raza study the compositions of Paul Cezanne. Taking cues from Mughal miniatures and the famed Post-Impressionist, this resulted in a collage of forms and multiple perspectives within his landscapes and cityscapes.
Explore a breathtaking array of Impressionist and modern art, to be offered in our forthcoming 20th Century Week auctions from 15–22 June.
Why this iconic piece, offered in New York on 20 June, represented a 'moment of profound transition’ for its creator — and for furniture design itself
