The document, a requisition written in Taylor's characteristic bold hand, is an interesting relic of Taylor's army career before he rose to prominence in the War with Mexico. Holding the rank of Colonel, Taylor commanded the 1st Regiment at Fort Crawford, and was Acting Indian Agent stationed in near the Winnebago and Sioux Indian reservations created by the treaties of 1832 which ended the bloody and futile Black Hawk War. Taylor's requisition, addressed to J.B.W. Stockton, "Military Disbursing Agent for the Indian Department," carries the heading "The United States To Edward Yoakum." Below, in column form, Taylor specifies that Yoakum is due $54.50 "for...services as labour or agriculturalist on the Winnebago Indian farm on Yellow River on the West Side of the Mississippi near Prairie du Chien under the 5th Article of the Treaty of Fort Armstrong Rock Island Illinois...for three months & nineteen days...." The bottom half of the document is Taylor's certification of the account: "I certify that the above account is just & true & that the services charged for therein have been faithfully rendered for the benefit of the Indians during the period stated. I accordingly make this my requisition...."
