The present work reflects Signorini's dedication to painting from nature ('dal vero'). Stylistically, it combines elements of Macchiaiolo painting -- marked here by the juxtaposition of browns and blacks on the left hand side of the composition -- but softened and made more transparent by the influence upon him of French landscape painters such as Corot, with whom he was familiar from several visits to Paris.

Signorini stayed at Portoferraio on the island of Elba in 1888. Here he has captured a moment when rain is due on the coast. The atmosphere is heavy and moody, offset by flashes of the emerald sea off the coast.
