INDENTJefferson Temple was one of sixteen crew of the Brig Advance which sailed from New York, 30 May 1853, under the command of Dr.E.K.Kane. Entering the straits at the top of Baffin's Bay the small group pushed as far North as possible before wintering near Rennsselar Harbour, Greenland. The next spring, sledge expeditions set out to search for Sir John Franklin's party which had disappeared in 1845, but they returned to the Advance without success. A second winter was passed in the ice bound ship, and in the spring of 1855, the party abandoned the Advance and made their way by small boats and sledges to the Danish settlement of Upernivik. Here they were met by Lieutenant H.J.Hartstein who, in February 1855, had been dispatched by the United States Congress to search for Dr. Kane's expedition.
Under Admiralty Order 5331 of 20 November 1857 the members of both Dr.Kane's original expedition and the rescue party under Lieutenant Hartstein were awarded the British Arctic Medal, 1818-55.
