ROBERT MOFFAT, AGENT OF THE LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY IN SOUTH AFRICA AND FATHER-IN-LAW OF DAVID LIVINGSTONE, arrived at the Cape in 1817, established the mission press at Kuruman in 1831. He translated and printed the complete Bible into Tswana in 1857, the first complete Bible in a vernacular African language, and was witnes to the Kaffir wars throughout his time in Namaqualand, Bechuanaland and Matabele. Returning to England in 1870, he died in 1883. In 1830 when Moffat was in Cape Town, no one at the Government Press could or would print his translation into Tswana of the Gospel of St Luke, so, with an assistant, he did the printing himself.
