Lot Essay

Hetty Pettigrew (1867-1953) was Roussel's favourite model and the mother of his daughter. She was a professional model who posed with her sisters Rose and Lily for Millais and Whistler. She met Roussel in 1884 and posed nude for his 1887 masterpiece, The Reading Girl (Tate Gallery, London). She continued to sit for the artist until his re-marriage in 1914.
