Theodore Roussel was one of Sir Anthony Van Dyck's pupils and is well-known for his copies after works by his master teacher. The present composition is based on a double portrait by Van Dyck depicting the Countess of Manchester and Lady Dick (see E. Larsen, The Paintings of Anthony Van Dyck, Freren, 1988, II, p. 494, no. A241). The Countess of Manchester was the wife of Edward, Second Earl of Manchester (1602-1671).
