Augerius Gislenus Busbequius was Ambassador for Emperor Ferdinand I to the Court of Suleiman the Magnificent from 1554-62; his accounts of this are preserved through his Legationis Turcicae epistolae quatuor. He is celebrated as the first European to introduce the tulip to Europe - a plant he had much admired in the gardens of Constantinople and Adrianople. Busbequius was depicted in an engraving by Melchior Lorck from a likeness taken in Constaninople in 1557.
