Lot Essay

Thomas Duncan was born in Kinclaven, Perthshire. Although he initially trained in law, he abandoned it to study art under Sir William Allan. He achieved particular early success in his career, and was appointed professor of colouring, and afterwards of drawing, in the Trustees Academy of Edinburgh.
