The present drawing relates to the on-the-spot sketches produced by James Moore on his Northern and Scottish tour of 1792. The subject matter reflects the antiquarian interests of Moore, Girtin's first patron, while stylistically, the influence of Edward Dayes, to whom Girtin was apprenticed at this time, can be seen. Girtin also produced another drawing, of the same date, showing the Priory from the other side (see op. cit. p. 137, no. 27, pl. 9).
