A note on the back of the frame reads 'Miniature of the Rev. William Shepherd L.L.D. For 56 years Minister of the English Presbyterian Chapel of Gateacre Liverpool. Author of the Life of Poggio Bracciolini, published in 1801, and other works. Painted by Hargreaves of Liverpool 1808.'
