PROPERTY FROM A NEW ENGLAND COLLECTION
The present drawings (lots 36-43) are all from the collection of Gilbert Davis (L.757a). Davis amassed a collection of over 3000 drawings and watercolours by English artists, or foreign artists working in England including one of the largest and most important collections of drawings by Thomas Rowlandson, over 350 in total. A group of about fifty drawings were purchased by the Huntingdon Trustees from Gilbert Davis in 1959. Davis's collection was without doubt one of the finest collection of the artist's works then in private hands. The Arts council in London held an exhibition from his collection in 1950 and works were frequently lent to exhibitions or reproduced in books on the artist.
