The present drawing comes from the collection of J. Leslie Wright, the Birmingham industrialist, who presented over four hundred early English drawings and watercolours to the City of Birmingham shortly before his death in 1953. The collection is now housed at the Birmigham Museum and Art Gallery. Wright's great interest was the draughtsmen of 18th Century, especially the work of Gainsborough, Sandby and Rowlandson.
Rowlandson painted many versions of this view at Hungerford. Another slightly larger scene was offered in these Rooms on 11 November 1997, lot 43.
