Two engravings recording the Emperor Qianlong's military campaigns in Formosa, 1787-1788
from a set of eighteen, after designs by the Court artists Kia Ts'tiuan and Li Ming, one depicting soldiers on foot and on horseback, overcoming the enemy on the banks of a river, numerous soldiers firing guns from floating rafts, other soldiers charging across a wooden bridge, framed and glazed; the other of a Palace scene, with the Emperor seated on a terrace overseeing numerous troops kneeling before him, each scene below a poem dated 1789, each engraving - 34¼in. x 19¾in. (87cm. x 50.2cm.).
This large format style of engraving was initially used in France for the Emperor Qianlong's first military campaign engravings commissioned in 1765. The Emperor was so delighted with the outcome of these French engravings that he commissioned Chinese craftsmen to execute further engravings of later campaigns. The two engravings in this lot are examples of Chinese workmanship. (2)
