Bartolemmeo Colleoni of Bergamo left funds in his will for an equestrian monument for himself. The original, in the Campo SS. Giovanni e Paolo, Venice, was modelled by Verrochio in 1483 and finally cast after the artist's death by Alessandro Leopardi in 1496. The Gattamelata original stands beside S.Antonio in Padua. It was commissioned by the Venetian Republic to honour Erasmo de Narni (d. 1370.) The statue was completed in 1447. De Narni was only later given the soubriquet of Gattamelata.
