TWO ROMAN AGATE RING STONES

Including a flat oval white agate engraved with a profile head of a bearded man, perhaps a philosopher, a fillet in his hair; set as a ring in a European gold and silver setting of circa 1800; and a flat nearly circular nicolo engraved with a Nereid riding a hippocamp, the nymph seated on the creature's back, her head turned frontal, her chiton exposing one breast, resting one hand on its tail, the other holding the reins, the hippocamp's coiled tail rising up behind her, a dolphin head below, the waves indicated by wavy lines, preserving a fragmentary original hollow gold setting
