    Lot Essay

The nine scenes illustrate the famous love story called Xi Xiang Ji or Romance of the West Chamber. The story tells the romance between the poor but talented Scholar Zhang Sheng and the beautiful Cui Yingying. They meet in the garden of an isolated monastery where she is staying with her mother, Madame Zheng and her maid Hongniang.
Madame Zheng disaproves their romance but the lovers undertake a secret relationship with the help of Yingying's maid as illustrated on one face (Zhang Sheng secretly climbing the wall of the monastery to meet his beloved). After having discovered their relationship, Yingying's mother manages to send Zhang Sheng away to the capital to seek his fortune. After being successful in his carrier and his return he is at last able to claim Yinying as his bride
