VERGILIUS, Publius Maro (70-19 B.C.). Opera. Commentary by Servius Maurus Honoratus, Tiberius Claudius Donatus, Valerius Probus, Antonius Mancinellus, Jodocus Badius Ascensius, Angelo Poliziano, and others. Venice: Luc'Antonio Giunta, 1552.
2° (312 x 217mm). Woodcut 2-part title border incorporating the printer's initials, part-title to the Aeneid with Giunta device, another Giunta device below colophon, 110 woodcuts, a number of which are signed 'L'. (Small marginal repairs in first 3 leaves, a few sheets browned, stain at first fore-edges, very occasional small staining thereafter.) 18th-century vellum. Provenance: 'C A' (initials on title) -- Giovanni Fiorenzi (inscription dated Rome, 1826).
Ninth Giunta edition. The woodcuts belong to a series cut for Giunta in close imitation of the fine set used by Grüninger at Strassburg in 1502. The original Grüninger blocks illustrate the Eclogues (except for the first) and Georgics, unlike previous Giunta editions. Cf. Mortimer Harvard Italian, 525; Adams V-491.
