(14 7/8 x 10 3/8in.), an eighteenth-century binding of pasteboard covered with a German vellum antiphonal leaf, edges stained blue, lacks leaf Q5 (supplied in photographic facsimile) and the bifolium M3 (folding woodcut diagram of the circulatory system), A4 and AA1 with small patches catching a few words with loss, S6 with small tear, some dampstaining, ink library stamp on title, portrait leaf and I6, some margins soiled and some softening, some gutters strengthened, modern cloth box.</I> FIRST EDITION, with the bifolium p4 (diagram of the nervous system) and the unpaginated cancel leaf signed m3 with eight woodcut anatomical details intended to be cut out and superimposed on the woodcut figure on bifolium m3 (missing); pictorial woodcut title, woodcut portrait of Vesalius (misbound after title), in all a series of over 200 woodcut anatomical illustrations, many full-page, showing the skeletal, muscular, vascular and nervous systems; numerous historiated initials showing surgery, etc.; all of the illustrations after an unknown artist probably from the Circle of Tiziano Vecellio; woodcut printer's device on final page.
