(Very light dampstaining in some fore-edges of vol. I, light dampstain on 1/1 and in extreme upper gutter of vol. III, a few leaves slightly smudged with ink, undoubtedly in the printing shop, opening line of vol. III partly masked.) Contemporary blindstamped calf over bevelled wooden boards, from the bindery of the monastery of SS. SECOND EDITION of Vincent of Beauvais's encyclopaedic history of mankind from Creation to the author's lifetime, ending about 1254. It treats of the physical world, early philosophers, scientists, and rulers, as well as secular and biblical history. It was the last of only 5 books printed at the Benedictine monastery of SS. Ulrich and Afra, and the present volumes were also bound at the monastery and include the identifying stamps with the names of its patron saints.
