Lot Essay

While it could be said that the classic Fornasetti style epitomizes the definition of trompe l'oeil, both father and son have themselves rarely used the term. One of the exceptions to this linguistic rule is this umbrella stand, where the use of cutout metal to shape the outlines of the wine keg and flasks "fools the eye" into believing the painted illusion rather than the piece's function.
