WAGNER, Richard (1813-1883). Autograph musical quotation signed ('Richard Wagner'), n.p., [3 Jaunary 1846], 'Gesang der Pilger aus: Tannhäuser, und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg' (the 'Pilgrim's Chorus' from Tannhäuser), 9 bars on two staves, on one page, 100 x 150mm, mounted with a carte-de-visite photograph of Wagner and a provenance note. Provenance: John Ella (autograph note signed, 'written in my Album and presented to me in Dresden as a memento of my visit & a token of affection').
Wagner's use of the original, longer title for Tannhäuser is an interesting reminder of the work's origin in the fusion of two folk stories. John Ella (1802-1888) was a champion of French and German styles of interpretation, particularly through his Musical Union subscription concerts, 1845-80.
