In 1935, Alfred Barr, Director of The Museum of Modern Art commissioned Walker Evans to photograph 450 of the 603 objects on display in the Museum's seminal exhibition, African Negro Art. Evans' task was to compile a record of the installation before the works were returned to their disparate owners in the United States and Europe. This project, which took several weeks to complete, and on which Miller collaborated, eventually yielded 17 sets of 477 prints in four volumes. Evans' approach to the task, Miller later recalled, was meticulous; he used movable paper stands and medium-tone seamless paper to create a neutral background for the objects and, to obviate strong shadows, adopted a technique of circling the lights around the artifacts while his camera shutter was open. In Miller's index to the Portfolio, Evans' is acknowledged for "...his superb craftsmanship and generous devotion to the project."
Lot 194, a small folio of 18 prints, is a selection of objects from the show and was, presumably, a gift to Miller from Evans to commemorate their collaboration on the project.
