4o (270 x 210 mm), 5 volumes. 150 stipple-engraved portraits. (Some browning of the paper.) English or Irish crimson straight-grained morocco of c. 1825, over pasteboard, tooled in gilt and blind, roll borders on sides and corner tools, spines decorated in compartments and lettered, roll-tooled borders on turn-ins, black silk liners, gilt edges. Provenance: Lionel Phillips (armorial bookplates dated 1905).
FINELY BOUND SET OF THE LARGE-PAPER FIRST ISSUE of Thomas Park's enlarged edition of Walpole's Royal and Noble Authors (see also previous lot). Park (1759-1834) proposed a continuation of the work, but it was never published. In fact, sales of his edition were slow and it went through various issues with slight changes. A.T.
