FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST DIRECTORY OF WASHINGTON, D.C., in original boards. It is particularly interesting for the listing of the lodgings of members of Congress. The president is listed along with the other residents: "Monroe, James, president of the United States, at the president's house." Other notables include the future president: "Adams, John Quincy, sec'y of state, No. 1, 2nd floor state dept--dw. n.side Fn btw 13 and 14w." Spear makes no mention of the engraved advertisements at end, two for engravers (one printed on orange paper) and three for watch and clock makers. Howes D-234; Spear p. 371.
