Half title (a very few faint isolated spots and stains). Original grey wrappers with labels printed in blue and red mounted on the upper wrapper, uncut (2 short tears to head of backstrip). Provenance: formerly the property of Bridget Grant (née Herbert), Evelyn Waugh's sister-in-law. FIRST EDITION. ONE OF 50 COPIES SPECIALLY ISSUED.
The Note on the upper wrapper reads: "This edition is issued privately for the author's friends; no copies for sale. Messrs. Chapman & Hall earnestly request that until they announce the publication of the ordinary edition in the early part of 1945, copies will not be lent outside the circle for which they are intended, and no reference will appear to the book in the Press."
