FIRST EDITION of the author's first book. "This lengthy book, begun in 1891 and published in 1898, formed part of that nineteenth-century development sometimes referred to as the 'liberation of algebra' (from restriction to quantities)" (DSB) and as such was an important precursor to Whitehead's mathematical logic. Further volumes never appeared because Whitehead and Bertrand Russell decided to collaborate--their joint continuation became the monumental Principia Mathematica of 1910-13.
