Contemporary half calf, spines with green and red morocco lettering pieces (some rubbing and light wear to spine and covers). Provenance: L.A. Platzer (contemporary bookplate and library marks in each volume).
FIRST EDITIONS of this charming handbook-sized encyclopaedia. The handcoloring of the plates is of a remarkable high standard and each of the subjects--humans, birds, insects, mammals, flowers--is extremely wide ranging. For example, the 10 volumes of floral illustations show a very wide variety of flowers, fruits and trees, there are representations of threshing practices, sugarmaking in the West Indies, volcanoes, garden designs, instruments and ornaments, and many attractive landscape and figurative scenes.
