Lot Essay

Chanan comments: 'The final expression of the oak...is an uncropped vertical, the raddled surface of the ancient bark counterbalanced by the impenetrable darkness of the larch and tempered by the softer focus of the middle ground...it is a composition that is the absolute converse of the commonality created by many of Craven's contemporaries...' (William, Earl of Craven, p.142)
