Lot Essay

In the early summer of 1846 Callow married Miss Charlotte Smart; on honeymoon they travelled through Europe to Venice, where they stayed at the Hotel Europa. A view of the same Piazza was executed by James Holland and was sold The Newall sale; Christie's, London, 13 December 1979, lot 50.

Another of Venice by Callow was sold in these Rooms, 20 November 2003 lot 117, for £28,680.
