Lota was built by Davis Ducart for the Cork-born burgher Robert Rogers. Hamilton executed three watercolours of Lota; the present watercolour is a panoramic view of the house set in its plantations, with shipping in the foreground and old Blackrock Castle with its eighteenth-centruy domed gazebo in the left foreground. For further information and an illustration of the watercolour see A. Crookshank and The Knight of Glin, The Watercolours of Ireland, London, 1995, p. 197-9, pl. 273. In referring to the three watercolours of Lota, Crookshank and Glin comment, 'These must be among the most delightfully arcadian views of an eighteenth-century Irish estate'.
