PATTERNS AS ART
The Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements placed patterns in art in a new light. They were no longer seen as a means to an end, but rather as an end in themselves. The pattern stood on its own. Amongst the most beautiful can be viewed in the oeuvre of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918).
The Art Deco, renowned for its geometry, relied on patterns to achieve its linear, bold look. Stunning creations in hardstone marquetry or lacquer rendered the period one of the most memorable in 20th Century aesthetics.
