Lot Essay

The artist mainly worked in his native The Hague, of which he did many views. He was trained by his father, the landscape artist Hendrikus van de Sande Bakhuyzen (1794-1860), and travelled widely throughout Holland; to Gelderland with his artist friends P. Sade and W.C. Nakken, and to Drenthe. In October of 1865, he left for Dsseldorf with Sade, to remain there for seven months. In 1879, he was invited by Prince von Wied to 'Friedrichsthal' and 'Monrepos' at Neuwied. He also travelled to Norway and France.
