Van Troostwijk came from a wealthy family in Amsterdam. He was taught by the brothers Anthonie and Jurriaan Andriessen, which is evident from the style in the second drawing in this lot. In 1805 he was appointed doorman of the Amsterdam town hall. On his journeys outside the city he made a number of drawings and watercolours, for one of which he was awarded a gold medal by the Felix Meritis society in 1808. Only recently an exhibition of the artist's drawings was held in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede, Wouter van Troostwijk 1782-1810, schilder, tekenaar en etser, 1998-9
