John Elliott, Sr. was a Philadelphia cabinet-maker who also sold American and imported mirrors. After developing a separate paint and drug business, John Elliott, Jr. added his father's business to his own. Five years after his father's death, John Elliott, Jr. stopped using the word "Junior" in his labels and in 1804, he was joined in business by his two sons. The label on this mirror dates from the period between these two events, 1796-1803. Although the label is in poor condition, a very similar label advertises Frames of American Manufacture, suggesting that this mirror was Philadelphia-made, not imported.
