"IT'S THE WRITER'S LOT, HIS DUTY...TO STEW, YEAR IN, YEAR OUT, IN HIS OWN JUICE"

Extremely good, charming and rare letters to a girl with the Salingeresque name of Phoebe -- her sister with the more improbable name of Esm. Because of stringent Salinger copyright restrictions, it is impossible to do more than summarize each letter. 13 February 1977: Entirely concerned with the fact that Phoebe Marshall had written Salinger that she and her sister were named after two of his characters: Phoebe for Holden Caulfield's kid sister in The Catcher in the Rye and Esm for the girl in the story "For Esm -- with Love and Squalor." 19 July 1977: In a polite but revealing way Salinger declines to read a short story that Phoebe has written and gives his thoughts on showing one's manuscripts to others. 9 May 1979: Another beautifully nuanced letter in which Salinger responds to news that Esm has moved to New York where she's become a model and that Phoebe has taken up dancing and photography. 10 June 1979: Again politely declining to read any of Phoebe's written work. 26 September 1982 (a postcard with a picture of Vermont barns on the recto): advice to a student in Paris.
