Lot Essay

Angels such as these would have adorned an altarpiece or a tomb monument as part of a pictorial whole, often high up and flanking the central composition.
Stylistically the pair belongs to the world of Jean del Cour (1631-1707), a sculptor working mainly around Lige. This is evident in the fluttering drapery and eloquent gesturing of the figures. For an example of Jean del Cour's work see Lesuisse (op. cit., pl. 95).
