De Ling (DATE IF POSSIBLE? PLEASE] , of Manchu descent, was also know as Junzhi and Yanxiang. His family name was Yan. He held the position of Prefect in Henan, later transferring to oversee the transport of sale. He was a painter of landscapes, bamboo and rock, and his calligraphy took after the seal script and clerical script (Zhuanshu and lishu) of the Qin, Han, Wei, and Qi dynasties, while he also wrote cursive script calligraphy. De Lin was a prodigious connoisseur. Before Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884) came to any recognition, he learnt under De Lin. However, after Zhao became famous, he never mentioned De Lin as his teacher, thus contributing to De Lin's relative anonymity today.
