The Cars of Aircraft Quality was an appropriate slogan when it was used by John Siddeley's Armstrong Siddeley company for its products in the 1930's. Typical of their rather staid but beautifully built automobiles was the six-cylinder Twelve, their mainstay from the 1920's and into the 1930's. There was also the impressive, technically advanced 4.9 litre Siddeley Special of 1934, a genuine 90mph luxury tourer. In the 1940's came an attractive range of handbuilt 2.3 litre drophead coupes and saloons given names such as Hurricane or Lancaster, shrewd reminders of the marque's aircraft heritage. Considered quite luxurious in their day but offering modest performance, they gave way in the early 1950's to the Sapphire, a thoroughly modern design which offered both polished walnut luxury and sparkling performance.
The Armstrong Siddeley Owners Club has supplied a summary of the factory's build record of this car which confirms it as an early Mark 2 Preselectric model, of which about 25 are understood to be roadworthy in the United Kingdom at this time out of a total of 200 Sapphires known to have survived.
It was originally delivered to Pass and Joyce, the marque's London distributors, who sold it to a doctor client in Middlesex in March 1955. In its present ownership for a number of years, the car has been dry stored and unused and therefore requires a certain amount of recommissioning before use. It is offered with a new replacement windscreen and exhaust system as well as a number of Sphinx magazines and related correspondence.
The car is sold with a V5 registration document and is offered Without Reserve.
