Lot Essay

This cup is unusual in that it is more shallow than most cups dating to this period and the mark is incised rather than written in underglaze blue. A pair of yellow-glazed cups of similar proportions with incised Jiajing marks in the collection of Mrs. Alfred Clark was included in the O.C.S. Exhibition of Monochrome Porcelain of the Ming and Manchu Dynasties, London, 1948, no. 169. As with the present example, the bases are also yellow-glazed.

A cup of the more standard, deeper variety was included in the O.C.S. exhibition, Iron in the Fire: The Chinese Potter's Exploration of Iron Oxide Glazes, Ashmolean Museum, 10 May - 19 June 1988, no. 60.
